Wayland High School was designed in the 1950s and built in the 1960s as a modular, team-teaching, California-style campus. Thirty years after it opened, some upgrades were made to the facility such as new roofs, system upgrades and new finishes.


Another major upgrade was scheduled for the late 2000s, and planning began in 2001 with the initiation of a Feasibility Study. During the planning process, however, the state building assistance program was suspended which made Wayland's ability to secure state aid uncertain. Though the town voted funding for a preliminary design in 2003, the vote for detailed design funds in January 2005 did not pass.

To ease the pressure on the school's heavily subscribed science program, two modular science classrooms were added to the campus in 2006.
