2009-02-06: Proposed FY10 budget
The School Committee voted to recommend an operating budget of $31,111,713 for FY10, which represents a 3.39%
increase and meets the Finance Committee’s guideline.
This budget assumes a reduction in state aid of $245,000 for the schools.
In order to meet this guideline, the following highlights some of the changes that will be made:
- Due to declining enrollment, the number of clusters at the Middle School will decrease from 3 to 2 for each of the
7th and 8th grades, reducing 3.6 FTEs and two house leader stipends.
- Elementary schools will consolidate further with the reduction of 3 classroom teachers.
- A secretarial position at the High School will be reduced.
- High school athletic fees will increase from $200 to $225 per sport per season.
- Parking fees will increase from $200 to $225 per year.
The School Committee also voted to recommend the following capital requests:
- $900,000, of which $480,000 is expected to be reimbursed by the State, to conduct the Feasibility
Study/Schematic Design phase of the modernization of the High School.
- $300,000 for two modular classrooms at the High School
- $550,000 to update the infrastructure to two remaining schools not yet updated; to replace outdated computers
as part of a 5 year replacement cycle; to begin a 1:1 teacher initiative with 25% of the district’s teachers;
and to continue to outfit classrooms with 21st century peripherals, including projectors and interactive whiteboards.
- $75,000 to complete the DEP’s Phase II Comprehensive Site Assessment for the area of the Claypit Hill
staff parking lot where an oil tank had leaked and contaminated surrounding ground soil when it was removed in 1985.
- $45,000 to install a handicap accessible ramp at the entrance to Happy Hollow to provide better access
and meet current codes.
- $30,000 for a maintenance van to replace a used vehicle that was acquired from the Police Department in 2005.
