2009-01-11: Ongoing budget discussion

To date, the School Committee has conducted two work sessions for the fiscal year 2010 budget.
  • At these two sessions, the Committee reviewed the personnel and non-personnel accounts, the Special Education budget, and the budget offsets. Offsets are funds used to reduce the total amount of the appropriation requested at Town Meeting for the School Department budget, for instance through user fees.

  • As part of this discussion, the Committee reviewed the various fees that are currently charged, including athletics, High School parking, and elementary music.

  • In addition, the Committee discussed implementing a bus fee. The state mandates that towns provide transportation to students in grades K-6 who live beyond 2 miles from their school. The Committee evaluated charging a bus fee for students in K-6 who live within two miles of their school and all students in grades 7-12. A final decision will be made when the Committee votes on the budget, most likely at its next meeting on Monday, January 12th.

  • The Committee has another budget work session scheduled for Monday, January 12th, and possibly a final one on Thursday, January 15th. At the January 12th meeting, the Committee plans to discuss the capital budget including the Technology and High School Building Project warrant articles. Please check the schedule link below for any changes.

  • Given the current economic crisis facing the state, the School Committee expects that further cuts will need to be made to the Fiscal Year 10 budget due to anticipated lower state aid. The School Committee will discuss these additional reductions before the Finance Committee’s final vote on the budget on January 29th.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 12th, at 7:00pm in the School Committee meeting room on the second floor of the Town Building (full meeting schedule).
