2008-01-29: Committee approves 2 1/2 schools for 2008-09; building selection set for 2/11

At our meeting on Monday, January 28, the School Committee voted unanimously to move to a 2 1/2 school model for the coming 2008-2009 school year. While not without challenges and some uncertainties, the Committee concluded in favor of a preservation of class size and the classroom experience coupled with a reduction in the override that will be requested of the town in April.

At our meeting on Monday, February 11, the Committee will hold a third and final public forum on the topic of which of the two smaller elementary schools (Happy Hollow or Loker) to convert to a Kindergarten-only "1/2" school. Later that evening, the Committee make its final determination. Between now and then, the Committee welcomes community input (see contact information below).
  • Topic: Happy Hollow/Loker comparison
  • Date: Monday, February 11
  • Time: 7:00pm to 9:0pm
  • Location: Large Hearing Room, Town Building (tentative)
  • Who should attend: All Wayland residents have a stake in this discussion
Over the next few days, the Committee will post the following documents and send out an announcement via email when all are available.
  • The failed override cut list
  • Details of accompanying co-curricular program cuts (athletics and activities)
  • The Committee's thinking on the 1/2 school decision and decision-making process
