2007-11-28: School Committee Proposes 3 Elementary Schools for Fall 2008
At our November 26 meeting, the Wayland School Committee reached an important decision about the configuration of the elementary schools for the 2008-2009 school year and discussed when and how we might alter that configuration in the near future.

1. In order not to compromise the quality of education that Wayland’s children receive, the Committee will recommend to the town that all three elementary schools remain open in their current “neighborhood” configuration in 2008-2009.

2. The Committee will continue to monitor incoming and projected enrollment on an annual basis; should elementary enrollment continue to decline, we will propose reconfiguring the number of buildings when educationally viable.

3. Should enrollment suggest a reconfiguration, our preliminary thinking is to maintain the neighborhood model. Over the coming weeks, the Administration and the Committee will continue to evaluate that model relative to a “consolidated grade” model that might, for instance, group Kindergarten through Grade 2 in one building and Grade 3 through Grade 5 in another.

4. The School Superintendent has convened a small working group consisting of administrators, teachers, and parents to evaluate which of our two smaller elementary schools—Happy Hollow or Loker—makes more sense to consider for closure when appropriate.

We encourage all residents to contact us at any time with respect to this or other school matters. At our next meeting on December 17 in the Town Building at 7:30pm (full meeting schedule), the Superintendent will present his proposed 2008-2009 budget to the Committee. Thank you very much for your continued support of the Wayland Public Schools.
