2007-02-08: Proposed policy regarding pregnant students

The Committee welcomes community input by phone, email, letter,
and attendance at public meetings and forums (schedule).

From time to time, the Committee adds, modifies, or eliminates policies. At our February 5th meeting, the Committee received from Superintendent Burton a proposed policy (provided by the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, MASC) regarding pregnant students.

The protocol for adopting a new policy is to introduce it, accept public comment for a period of 30 days, revise as necessary (and perhaps restart the 30 day clock), then approve. Please direct any comments to info @ waylandschoolcommittee.org.

PREGNANT STUDENTS (File: JIE)

School-age mothers, unless they receive adequate assistance, might drop out of school without acquiring the necessary education or without marketable skills.

Pregnant students will be permitted to continue in school. The student and her physician, in cooperation with the school staff, will develop an appropriate educational plan if it is agreed she should no longer attend school regularly.

Every effort will be made to see that the educational program of the student is disrupted as little as possible; that health counseling services, as well as instruction are offered; that return to school after delivery is encouraged; and that every opportunity to complete high school is provided.

Our next meetings are scheduled for Monday, February 26th, and Monday, March 5th, both at 7:30pm in the School Committee meeting room on the second floor of the Town Building (full meeting schedule).
